If you have never used a kettlebell before, then you are missing out. The DVD is led by Senior Russian Kettlebell Instructor, Andrea DuCane, so it is like having one of THE top kettlebell instructors in the country right with you in your own home.  If Pavel Tsatsouline is the “father” of kettlebells in America (having brought his knowledge of them over from Russia) then Andrea is the “mother” of kettlebell instruction for women.  She has put together an almost 2.5 hour DVD of kettlebell goodness that will kick your butt into the best shape of its life.  It is so long because it is filled with instruction on how to properly perform all of the many different exercises.  The Goddess DVD is structured into 6 “goddess workouts” each of which targets a different portion of the body.  But since kettlebell exercises always work your whole body in some way, even while the sections might focus on “abs and core”, “upper body”, “lower body”, etc.. you can be sure that you aren’t neglecting the other parts of your body either.

So while one of the around 20 minutes workouts is great for the truly time-strapped, my favorite part is the ability to mix and match any two of the 6 “goddess workouts” for a great, full-body, fat-blasting workout.  And being able to mix them, will keep you interested for a long time.  The possibilities with kettlebells are endless!  So much so, that you can quickly get overwhelmed in trying to figure out on your own where to start, which is where The Goddess Workout comes to the rescue.

Only very strong women should start with the 35lb kettlebell. This is the size kettlebell that I started with, but keep in mind that I am 6’2″ and a former professional athlete. I think plenty of women could start with this kettlebell if they were only going to be doing 2-handed swings. That is not a horrible way to go as the swing is one of the best exercises ever and eventually you’d work up to being able to do more with it, but it could be a touch boring. One of the great things about the kettlebell is its versatility, to be so limited wouldn’t be taking full advantage of the tool. Not to mention, that to follow the Goddess Workout you’ll need to feel comfortable with holding the kettlebell over your head, so while you can definitely get to the 35lber, most women should start with either the 18lber or the 26lber and get their technique down first before trying to go heavier.

If I Had To Complain…

My first complaint about kettlebells in general is their tendency to multiply! Kettlebell workouts are strangely addicting and as you progress, don’t be surprised if you find yourself going back for more. But more seriously, everyone’s biggest complaint about the kettlebells from DragonDoor is the price. Sure you can find other brands of kettlebells for less, but Dragondoor kettlebells are the Cadillac of the kettlebell world; the best of the best. And so, like most things that are high quality, you can expect to pay a bit more. The price is not totally unreasonable though, and its a downright steal considering how portable and versatile kettlebells are. You will be able to do complete strength training workouts and plenty of cardiovascular conditioning with this one piece of equipment. No gym memberships required and no sprawling home machines that dominate entire rooms. I have DragonDoor brand kettlebells and kettlebells from other manufacturers and there is no comparison. I should have purchased all of my kettlebells from DragonDoor there is that much of a difference. The shape of the handle, the balance of the weight and how the bell part of the kettlebell sits on your forearm are all just perfect. While the balance of the weight may not be totally obvious to a new trainee, the smoothness of the handle will be. The texture is just right and there are no ridges or rough spots that can tear your hands up when you are trying to workout. Not only will that put a stop to your workout, but it can be ugly and painful as well. So if this is not just a passing phase for you and you are serious about getting into top shape, then consider a Dragondoor kettlebell an investment in your health.

About the video I can only complain that there aren’t rest periods built in. And that isn’t really a complaint as its easier to pause the video if you need a break when you are just starting out than to fast-forward later on when you are in good enough shape to keep up with Andrea. I think this is actually a good design choice as it ensures that you won’t grow out of a slow moving DVD, but it is something to be aware of if you are just starting out.
