The first time I saw the title “The Truth About Six Pack Abs,” I laughed.  I mean, come on, that is a hyped up title.  And lets not forget the fabulously ripped people on the cover. But I read all sorts of fitness information and so I read a few articles by the books author, certified trainer and nutritionist, Mike Geary.  What I read turned out to be very different from what I was expecting.  In fact some of his ideas where in line with what I already know about fitness… like endless cardio and crunches are mostly useless.  In fact he goes on to explain that this myth can actually prevent you from achieving your fitness goals.  Ok, point scored my Mr. Geary there and I began to get more intrigued.  So I signed up for the free tips and was even more impressed with the quality of information, so I decided to give the Truth About Six Pack Abs a try.

What’s Good About The Truth About Six Pack Abs:

What I like most of this book is its extensive diet and nutritional information.  The information is written in a friendly style and is well-structured. There are so many fad diets and supplements and misinformation out there in the media that it is hard to have a decent understanding of nutrition.  In fact, this is the most important part of the program.  You can’t out-train a bad diet.  Mr. Geary’s book covers many subjects such as:

  • The true stories about dietary fats and carbs
  • The widespread myths about saturated fats
  • The shocking facts about trans fats in our food supply
  • How much protein you really need
  • A thorough explanation of how blood sugar and insulin affect your ability to lose body fat
  • Specific food types and tricks that will significantly help increase fat burning within your body
  • The most effective method of meal and nutrient timing to best stimulate fat loss and muscle recovery

This book does not require you to buy or use supplements, powders or diet pills and instead focuses on getting healthy by eating real food in the right combinations and proportions and at the right times.  A big part of the book is the over 84 healthy meal plans that you can use as a basis for your own nutrition plan.

On the workout side, The Truth About Six Pack Abs focuses heavily on the proper combination and sequencing of full-body exercises.  In fact, he insists (and I agree) that traditional abdominal exercises are the least important part of the program for achieving a flat stomach.  Many of his full-body exercises are actually way more challenging to the abs than any crunch.  And have the benefits of increasing your metabolism and stimulating the release of fat-burning hormones.  Depending on which workouts you do they can take from 30-50 minutes, 3-4 times per week.. which fits in well with both my schedule and my belief that workouts don’t need to take hours to be effective.  The Truth About Six Pack Abs workouts can also be done either at home or in a gym.  There are many bodyweight-only exercises that require no equipment at all.  But to really take your workouts to the next level, Mr. Geary advocates advocates free weights such as barbells and dumbbells.  Access to that kind of equipment gives you quite a few more options, but you can get by without if you can’t don’t have the equipment and can’t afford (or don’t want) a gym membership.  I have all that equipment in my home gym now, but you can get by with a bare minimum of adjustable dumbbells and maybe a medicine ball.  You’ve always got your own body at your disposal and as Mr. Geary illustrates, that can provide you with quite a challenging workout.

Who Will Benefit the Most…

While anyone who is serious about getting a flatter stomach (and new research says that extra abdominal fat is deadlier than we previously thought) can benefit from The Truth About Abs.  However, I think women will benefit the most from this book.  One of the goals of this site is to convince women that weight training for women shouldn’t be different from training for men. In general, women will require fewer calories and usually use lighter weights than men, but the fact remains that the best training and nutrition strategies apply equally to both genders.  The best exercises for increasing the metabolism and stimulating the fat-burning hormones are the best exercises regardless of gender, so the exercises in this book will work equally well for women.

One of the main reasons that women struggle so much to reshape their bodies is that their training is generally focused on the type of endless, repetitive cardio and tiny, paperweight dumbbells lifting that is so ineffective.  Besides being mindnumbingly boring, this type of training just doesn’t trigger the type of hormonal and metabolic responses needed to deliver results.  As I discussed elsewhere on my site, one of the biggest myths in weight training for women is that women will get “huge” or “bulky” from lifting.  Mr. Geary does a great job of addressing this concern, and his workous guarantee that you won’t become a muscle-bound bodybuilder, unless you want to.

The book is also great for a wide ranges of ages and fitness levels.  The nutritional strategies can be used by everyone from teenagers to great-grandparents looking to get healthier, and will go a long way to opening your eyes about problems in your diet you weren’t even aware of.  And the workout programs can be adjusted to fit your current level.  Even if you are totally out of shape and haven’t worked out in ages, you should be able to perform most of the advanced exercises.  You will just have to modify them by using lighter weights, slower movements and longer rest periods.  As you progress you will be able to increase your workout intensity.

If I Had to Complain…

There are 2 main problems that I found with the Truth About Six Pack Abs book. The first is that there is a potentially overwhelming amount of information contained in the book. The book doesn’t hold back and covers a great variety of subjects in depth. The writing is clear, it is just that Mike Geary covers so many subjects, such as:

  • The science behind ab definition
  • Why multi-joint exercises are always superior (which confirmed for me what I had guessed at for a while)
  • The cardio and crunch myth and why too much can actually prevent you from attaining your desired results
  • Which foods are unknowingly sabotaging our diets

The second problem, which is sort of related to the first, is that since there is so much information it is hard to know exactly where to start. The book does not provide workout tracking sheets, which I think is an oversight on Mr. Geary’s part and something I hope to see in a future edition. There are so many new exercises that at your first workout you might remember what you are supposed to be doing. I am a big believer in the maxim “What gets measured, gets results” so I believe in tracking my workouts. Not having the workout sheets provided is not a deal-breaker, I just had to spend a few minutes writing them out in my workout journal, with some notes on how to properly perform the exercises. That might seem annoying, but you really only need those notes the first one or two times and then you only need the journal to record your progress.

In Conclusion

Yes, reading a book can sometimes be dull, and there is an awful lot of information to digest in The Truth About Six Pack Abs, but it is all relevant and useful information.  And best of all, you don’t need to implement everything all at once.  I am usually guilty of “paralysis by analysis” and trying to get everything done all at the same time.  But the thing about The Truth About Siz Pack Abs is that you can pick just a few changes (especially on the diet/nutrition side) to make right now.  You do not have to try to implement all his changes all at once.  In fact, you are likely to fail miserably in the attempt.  By nature, we humans like to resist change… even change that is good for us.  The more radical the changes, the more we resist.  So we almost have to trick our brains!  A few small changes heres, let those become habits, then make a few more.  And that is part of the secret behinds abs and fitness in general.  Its not a quick-fix solution, and Mike Geary does a great job of approaching fitness as the long-term habit that it is.  It make take several weeks or months to see significant changes in your body.  Sure it would be nice if we could all get fit and slim in a week with no effort, but that is not reality.  Anything that promises that is either lying or more likely unsafe.  Mr. Geary’s approach to diet and nutrition being the majority of the battle is spot on.  This site is dedicated to Weight Weight Training for Women.  I love lifting and weight training is great for strength, health and can contribute to fat loss, but true body transformation relies heavily on nutrition.  The Truth About Six Pack abs is a treasure trove of solid dietary information with plenty of nutritional tips and tricks to get you started on the road to a healthier body.

thanks Chris. i’m glad you found the review helpful. there is a lot of hype surrounding this product- like a book could somehow be a magic bullet for fitness. it is extremely popular and sells well, but i think it falls short as a weight training book. as a nutritional book it has more value. stay strong!
